In honor of Sonja and her vision for this chapter, we are providing members with a unique opportunity to work with Developmental Editor Kristen Weber to strengthen their craft and experience firsthand the value of working with a developmental editor.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Capitol Crimes has contracted the services of Developmental Editor Kristen Weber to work with up to twenty writers on their short stories. Members must be current with both Capitol Crimes and Sisters in Crime dues to qualify for the member price. Writers who submit their story and payment will be able to participate on a first come first serve basis. Work with Kristen must be concluded by November 30, 2020.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
The cost to Capitol Crimes members for developmental editing of one story meeting our requirements is $150.00. For nonmembers, this price is $300.00. Even this price is well below the usual cost of hiring a developmental editor for a short story, which could run as much as $600.
WHAT AM I PAYING FOR?
Kristen Weber is a developmental editor. Developmental editors specialize in helping a draft reach its full potential. She will read your story and mark it throughout with comments via track changes, along with a shorter note of overall thoughts. Her comments mainly focus on content - and on everything from pace to character development, the overall readability, and story structure as well as smaller line notes. She is not a copy editor and will be more focused on the unfolding of the story than grammar and punctuation, but she will point out any glaring errors. Once you receive her first set of comments on your story, she will respond with up to two emails. If you choose to revise based on her notes, she will provide a shorter critique of the second draft and again be available to respond to up to two emails regarding those revisions. This process must be completed by November 30, 2020.
You can visit www.kristenweber.com to learn more about her background first as an editor at several major publishers in New York and now as a freelance editor in Los Angeles.
WHAT ARE MY RESPONSIBILITIES?
If you are interested, start working on your story! The story must be in the mystery genre and less than 5,000 words. Stories that do not fit these guidelines will not be accepted for the developmental edit process with Kristen.
Submissions for the Developmental Editor Services will open on July 20, 2020, on a first come first serve basis, and close once twenty submissions are accepted or September 15, 2020, whichever comes first. Payment must be made in full before your story is sent to Kristen.
Kristen will send her comments within 7-14 days of receiving a story. You are responsible for making revisions based on her first edit in a timely manner. Your second draft must be submitted to her no later than November 1, 2020, in order to give her time to provide a second edit and up to two emails regarding that edit. It is your responsibility to submit revisions by November 1, 2020, in order to receive the second edit. Our contract with Kristen ends on November 30, 2020.
We believe that this is a great opportunity for our members to work with a developmental editor, learn about the process, and create strong stories.
Sonja truly had a vision for this innovative way to provide a great opportunity to our members to strengthen their writing, and we look forward to working together to make this dream a reality.
